ASSISTANT PORT ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION:
Seeking an experienced, motivated individual to support the Port Engineer in the maintenance of tugs and barges.
ASSISTANT PORT ENGINEER EXPERIENCE:
- 2+ years repairing and maintaining ocean tug boats.
- Sailing experience as Chief Engineer preferred.
ASSISTANT PORT ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Can plan and manage the repair of vessels, including managing a crew, working with vendors, classification and regulatory agencies, etc.
- Can work independently, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and can work as a member of team, side-by-side colleagues of all positions.
- Prior management experience
- Knowledge of tugs and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
- Ability to repair marine equipment on site under adverse conditions.
- Ability to work with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
- Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members.
- Capable of boarding barges and tugs at sea and in port.
- Able to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with tug operations.
- Valid TWIC or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Valid State drivers’ license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Available to take communications 24 hours a day, including weekends, to field questions/concerns regarding vessel maintenance, repairs and operations.
- May travel on short notice.
- Knowledge of operating, repairing and maintaining diesel and gas engines.
- Ability to read and understand repair manuals.
- General metal fabrication skills.
- Knowledge of basic hydraulics.
- Knowledge of basic electrical ac & dc single phase and three phase 208/480.
- Basic plumbing experience.
- Basic knowledge with air controls.
- Experience with CAT and John Deere Gen Sets.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work long hours, seven days a week.
- Ability to multitask and work within critical time constraints.
- Ability to handle stressful situations with focus.
- Occasional overtime as required.
